VANCE CREEK

The Vance Creek Bridge, an iconic arch bridge in Mason County, Washington, stands as a testament to history, having served a logging railroad since 1929. Decommissioned in the 1970s amid the decline of logging on the Olympic Peninsula, it gained recognition on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. A shared video on Facebook sparked the idea of a journey to Seattle, revolving around a visit to this abandoned marvel. Lori's spirited all-nighter before departure set a unique tone, as nine individuals embarked on an unforgettable exploration of the city's beauty and the awe-inspiring Vance Creek Bridge.

The day of the excursion began early, with a 4 am wake-up call and a two-hour drive from Seattle to the base of the Olympic National Forest. Satellite images had painted a picture of dense forest, but as they approached, dismay settled in at the sight of rampant deforestation. The journey led them to a gravel patch within a lumber operation, where the true quest began. Lost amidst various roadways, lumber piles, and faux surveillance cameras, the group persevered, eventually discovering the bridge after a detour. The initial setback only added to the thrill, and over 350 feet below the towering structure, they found themselves in awe, capturing moments that made the entire experience worthwhile.

The adventure continued as they navigated the challenging ascent onto the bridge, with Tyrell's initial terror turning into a triumphant walk. Amidst laughter, reflections, and therapeutic moments, the group embraced the solitude for 45 minutes before making their way back. The air was pristine, the temperature perfect, and life's problems momentarily faded away. After capturing memories and relishing the uniqueness of the moment, they left the bridge and ventured into the Olympic National Forest. Though brief, their appreciation for the wonders of nature added another layer to an already unforgettable day, concluding with a well-deserved reflection on the entire excursion.
