What does it mean to be Black?
It's to be strong, to be resilient, to be creative and to know what it is to really endure.

What small act of kindness were you once shown that you will never forget?
Growing up, I was always trying to please everybody. I always wanted to be and do what they wanted.

Somebody saw that in me and said one thing: " You are enough!"

    What makes a person strong?
I honestly think a person is strong when he or she can see the weakness in somebody else and have the capability to lift that person up. I feel that emotions are the strongest barriers we carry in life, good or bad.

If you could give any advice or words of encouragement, what would it be?
Don't be afraid to fail! Use it as a chance to critique, plan, and attack!

    What makes a person strong?
Emotional and mental awareness and stability.

If you could give any advice or words of encouragement, what would it be?

What small act of kindness were you once shown that you will never forget?
I transferred to Williams in 3rd grade. Darneil Fuller walked up to me one day and said: Hey man, I heard you got a twin brother. I got twin brothers too so I understand twins. The small act of kindness is found in him taking his own experience + sharing it with me to make a connection between strangers in an organic way. I didn't know it then but that moment singlehandedly shaped the way I view my approach to finding common ground with others to this day.

    What makes a person strong?
Carrying out actions from a place of love is what makes a person and a people strong.

If you could give any advice or words of encouragement, what would it be?
Smile more. Be kind to yourself and others. Accord you know but that shouldn't stop you from seeing as much of it as possible. Start at excellence and go up from there. Your brain welcomes a challenge from you. Always remember who you are and who you represent. In order to remember, you must know first.

Drink more water. Life is long because nobody knows what death is really like so concern yourself with living + don't worry about dying.

Be an agent of change for the good.

Enjoy trying love on. If it doesn't fit, take it off. Take some time, find love that's real and feels good then wear that shit out.

What does it mean to be Black?
To be Black is to be part of a group that is constantly admired as well as feared. Admired for the strength and various accomplishments, but also feared because of a shared history that has been anything but nurturing and embracing. A people that were brutally taken from their homeland, and all they knew and loved, but have managed to thrive and prosper in a country that wasn't considered a "dream." To be black means to constantly remember that our history didn't begin with whips and chains, but royalty, wisdom and strength, and therefore we have an internal perseverance and strength is often tested daily yet seldom acknowledged and/or rewarded.

What small act of kindness were you once shown that you will never forget?
Long ago someone told me, I wish you saw yourself the way others see you. Although difficult to hear, it helped me realize that while how others see you is important, it is most important how you see yourself. One of the greatest acts of kindness is showing someone the beauty and strength that they possess.

    What makes a person strong?
The ability to not only overcome opposition, but also encourage and enlighten someone else to do the same.

If you could give any advice or words of encouragement, what would it be?
Always remember, that it is darkest just before dawn, and no matter how dark the night, God will always allow the sun to shine. You just have to shift your perspective as quickly as the light pierces the darkness. You are strong, so make sure you are intentional about using that strength to make the world a better place.

A group of us young men had tried out for baseball teams at a local park and been rejected. A older guy in the neighborhood named Hank found all of us and created a Baseball team and called us the Panthers. We went around to various parks challenging their best teams and we won the majority of our games. This would be the original spark that set a fire in my heart to be a champion for young people who get overlooked and excluded.

    Occupation: Program Specialist
    City of Birth: Gary
    Current Location:
    Age: 36

What does it mean to be Black?
I’ve always considered it a blessing to be black. Our skin has been kissed by GOD and the sun many times over. We may have a history of affliction, but we’ve still been able to achieve, thrive and inspire. Society copies us in efforts to incapsulate our essence and brilliance, but they can’t. Maya Angelou said it perfectly, “I’m so grateful to be a black woman. I would be so jealous if I were anything else.”

What small act of kindness were you once shown that you will never forget?
I was in church one day and wanted to give in the offering. I didn’t say anything but the lady beside me wrote me a check for $1,000. I put that whole check in the offering.

    What makes a person strong?
Resilience. The knowledge that you can make it through, past or beyond what you’re going through. I don’t think we ever know how strong we are until we’re placed in situations where strength is the only option.

If you could give any advice or words of encouragement, what would it be?
Know that you are fearfully and wonderfully made in the image of GOD. The very GOD that created the universe, the heavens and the earth saw fit to create you too.

What it means to be black, uniquely and unapologetically misplaced from your continent of origin and unapologetically existing as my ancestor’s wildest dreams.

What small act of kindness were you once shown that you will never forget?
I had to do a small event by myself, and I was working so hard to keep it together. Debbie Weiss was the bartender that evening and she came to my table and gave me a sticky note that read "Kiya you are amazing and fantastic" it was a reminder that no matter how hard we may be sweating under pressure, there is always someone who really does see your hard work and thinks highly of you. I put that sticky on my vision board as a reminder to keep going.

Resilience, perseverance, and a continuance effort in pushing past adversity.

If you could give any advice or words of encouragement, what would it be?

    City of Birth: Chicago
    Current Location: Gary
    Age: 😯

What does it mean to be Black?
Challenging. Most times for me, it's like being Mrs. Sophia " All my life, I got to fight!"

What small act of kindness were you once shown that you will never forget?
To start my business, I had sold everything that I owned to buy my mobile grooming truck. During this time my dog got sick. I stood in the vet's office dumbfounded, because I had no resources to pull from to help him. A gentleman (Angel) was there to pick up meds for his dog. He paid for his meds, then he laid his card down, and instructed the front desk girl to charge whatever I needed to take care of my dog. Four years later I started a rescue to help pet owners that would find themselves in similar situations.

    What makes a person strong?
    Never giving up.

If you could give any advice or words of encouragement, what would it be?

  • Robert Buggs

    Occupation: Retired
    City of Birth: Flora, Mississippi
    Current Location: Gary
    Age: 80

What does it mean to be Black?
To me it means being a member of a Race of people who is the most resilient human beings on planet Earth. Because of the HUE we are, we have been and continues to be beaten, enslaved, killed via the most horrendous means imaginable, because we are Black in color/ hue. The WHO we are is NEVER acknowledged by the White system as Doctors, Lawyers, inventors, Scientists, War heroes. Authors, Judges. I might mention that we are the most Forgiving people on earth given what we have been subjected to. So, it means that I am proud to be a Black Man who is very unapologetic about who I am as a Black human being, that GOD WANTED ME TO BE!!!

What small act of kindness were you once shown that you will never forget?
An elderly white lady came up and touched me while I was in Mississippi visiting and said thank you for your service, I had forgot I was wearing my military cap. With the racial hatred of Black people in Mississippi, it was the most humbling experience I can remember in her sweet Southern dialect and grandmotherly demeanor I will always cherish because it was a learning moment to not prejudge anyone by the actions of others.

    What makes a person strong?
His or her desire to persevere under the most adverse circumstances and maintain a positive attitude with failure never being an option!!!

If you could give any advice or words of encouragement, what would it be?
Accept JESUS CHRIST as your Savior and repent your sins. If this is done from the heart, then everything else will be according to GODS WILL because our minute tenure on earth is like steam that quickly dissipates and is no more. HEAVEN AND HELL IS REAL, don’t get it twisted!!!!!

What small act of kindness were you once shown that you will never forget?

If you could give any advice or words of encouragement, what would it be?
When I wanted to start my first business, I planned, wrote it down, talked about it constantly, asked questions, took surveys...but one day my best friend said to me "Just Do It".

So my advice to doing anything in life you want to do is to "JUST DO IT". Take the first step and God will handle the rest.

I lost my retail job at hardware store in the 2008 recession. It was hard finding a job at that point. A good brother named Arrington Fultz took me under his wing and taught me how to invest in real-estate and how to become an awesome photographer. What does it mean to be Black?
Being "Black" is being proud in who we are as a people from our strengths, perseverance and standing firm in the fact we built this Country we call home. The use of the word black to describe a race of people by the color of our skin, as a society we've embraced to take the power out the word to define how great and an honor to be Black & Proud.

What small act of kindness were you once shown that you will never forget?
A few years ago, I wanted to have a stronger since of faith and how to walk in grace. Growing up in the church, along with believing in giving back to our people through service and deeds. Just coming to church every Sunday wasn't enough, so I joined the Media Ministry as Covid shut down faith houses, but we had to change with the times to offer online services. One day my Pastor came to me asked if I wanted to be a paid staff member. To me, that offer was an act of kindness and in her way of showing gratitude towards the commitment to perform the takes weekly. Granted, it's just a small stipend but the kindness of my Pastor helps me to continue to walk in grace and God will supply my needs.

    What makes a person strong?
A person is strong by knowing who they are both inside and outside. Strong people carry themselves with their heads up and walk in their confidence. Strong people also are able to show vulnerability as life is not perfect and are able to pick themselves back and move forward.

If you could give any advice or words of encouragement, what would it be?
Be the best version of yourself, unapologetically because no one can be you but you.

Understand that life is like a race with many obstacles. You can use each one of these to fortify you in preparation for the next one, or you can give up. Each obstacle gives you a strength you might not have acquired had you not persevered. Keep running the race.

What does it mean to be Black?
Considering I've never been anything else, I take that as what it means to be myself. I would define me as simply complicated, heard yet misunderstood at times, intimidating to those who don't know the path I've walked to get where I am, outspoken and bold, sympathetic and unapologetic. Being black is not a "thing" you don't get to pick as if you have a choice, you are chosen, selected by God and for that I am proud and honored.

What small act of kindness were you once shown that you will never forget?
The smallest act that instantly comes to mind was when I was out of state in completely unfamiliar territory, and I had just witnessed the death of my husband. After everything I feel to my knees in the middle of the street laying in the blood my husband left behind, just lying there numb. Suddenly I was surrounded by shadows. Those shadows were the Latina women from that neighborhood with rosary beads completely surrounding me and speaking in their native tongue, but yet I knew exactly what they were saying, I knew what they were praying for and it was me. That day alone is unforgettable, but those women and their actions will never be forgotten.

    What makes a person strong?
I feel a person is strong according to their responses and reactions to different types of life situations thrown their way. The way we respond to something often times will determine what happens next whether negative or positive. Your reaction to the outcome of your response to whatever that particular situation is a display of your strength. Your ability to adapt and adjust to anything is a characteristic of a strong person.

If you could give any advice or words of encouragement, what would it be?
Try it and see what happens. It will either work out or you'll have to adjust and make some changes and try again. But trying is the most important part.

To be a member of a community of excellence, past and present. From pharaohs to artists to actors to scientists and everything in-between.

What small act of kindness were you once shown that you will never forget?
Once in high school, I was at the airport, tired, frustrated and fighting with the tampon dispenser that ate my quarter, a very nice lady gave me a tampon and said, "Us ladies have to stick together." I was ridiculously grateful in that moment--more than she knew.

    What makes a person strong?
The ability to admit failure and learn from it, combined the with ability to ask for aid. Both denote wisdom, which is at the core of strength.

If you could give any advice or words of encouragement, what would it be?
To trust that despite setbacks and sorrow, there exists a being who will never leave you--God. He's always a friend, a comforter, a advocate, and He will NEVER leave you to fight and live by yourself.

  • Terra L. Cooks aka Poetry 'N' Motion

What does it mean to be Black?
Predominantly, I don't see 'color'. I see people. "I am as Black as you are White; and as White as you are Black." (Quote from my poem, Influential Blackness, 2007) --- Being Black means learning who I am culturally and genetically. Embracing the highs and the lows. Excepting the ignorance along with the brilliance. Breaking the cycles and making changes where I can. Being someone that not only MY children can look up to, but others as well. And being that change that I speak about and others only think about.

What small act of kindness were you once shown that you will never forget?
I've been blessed to have more than one... But I think this one stands out the most... I was asked to host event and I did. Well, at the end of the event, I had given acknowledgment, little gifts and a trophy to the Librarians, Mrs. Moore and Mrs. Carr and to my artist friend for their dedication and hard work. Mrs. Moore and Mrs. Carr surprised me with a gift basket for pitching in to help. But there was this young lady, one of the students, maybe 12 or 13 years old, who looked me in the eye with this matter-of-fact, "Yeah, I know your secret” look and said, "You should pat yourself on the back and thank YOU, TOO for all the hard work that you did." I just looked at her and smiled, but I was kind of taken back by her statement. In my mind, I was like, HOW IN THE WORLD COULD SHE KNOW THAT?! I didn't tell anyone what I did!!! It just felt really awesome and appreciated to acknowledged by one of the students, without provocation. It was like she noticed, AND said, what the adults hadn't. But the gift basket from the Librarians was a nice surprise, too. ☺️

    What makes a person strong?
Hmmmm 🤔. I think admitting to your weaknesses; letting certain people see those weaknesses; finding the strength to reach beyond yourself for someone else's sake when you feel weak or at your lowest; using your weakness to find your strength or finding that strength in the face of fear or adversity; and admitting when you're wrong or saying 'I'm sorry' when you REALLY don't want to or don't believe that you should have to.

What does it mean to be Black?
I proposed this question because in all honesty, I really don’t know. I see black as a color and when I look at the people who raised me, I see a rainbow of pigments that aren't "black" but are lumped into that bucket. When I look at the country that assigned me this color for representation it just reminds me of our past. A past that many people want to overlook or forget it ever happened. What were my ancestors before they were rebranded black? I will never know. Although I appreciate the positive spin that many have put on the title "black", I feel like I only say I'm black because I've been programmed to do so.

What small act of kindness were you once shown that you will never forget?
In early 2020 before covid was "real" I was extremely ill for 1 day (probably covid). I could barely breathe, and I remember being in bed thinking "man… I'm about to die. This is really it… this sucks. Well, I guess I had a good ride." I was just alone and to a point where I couldn't even ask for help because I could barely breathe. Randomly my son enters the room, gets in the bed, and just places his hand on mine. I don't know if he could sense something was wrong, but that moment made me forget about my pain. You never know how your presence alone will positively impact someone.

    What makes a person strong?
Being able to push through the roadblocks that life throws at you. Being able to ask for help when those obstacles become too much to handle.

If you could give any advice or words of encouragement, what would it be?
Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. We know life is short, so take care of your temple.

Being Black is being the seasons of the earth that spice up the colors of the universe around her and the herb to fix and heal. Being black is strength overcoming everything that the world says we are not yet prof that we are everything that carries meaning. Without being black, this world would hold no color or substance to anything and I’m so proud of being Black.

What small act of kindness were you once shown that you will never forget?
The smallest act of kindness was in 2018 when a white gentleman in Miller paid for trick or treat candy that I purchased and explained to me that no one would come up his street to get the candy he would pass out but wanted to pay for all the candy I brought so that the kids could receive it because my smile made him happy and that he would be happy if I would let him contribute and pass it out on his behalf.

    What makes a person strong?
What makes a person strong is when that person stands accused of things, has to fight to prove themselves, has to be whom they are against individuals that just hate to hate and with scares and marks from them, still stand and take it with a smile on their face and with a mighty beating heart and continue to preserver onward with faith and purpose.

If you could give any advice or words of encouragement, what would it be?
My advice or words of encouragement would be to be authentically you. You paint your own masterpiece. When you be yourself and do good, it shows and you will never have to prove anything to anyone because your character, love, joy and work of worthiness will always be displayed without you every having to promote it.

I wake up every day knowing that I have a purpose and that I must represent my legacy well. There is nothing I cannot overcome. My people have proven their resilience over & over again.

What small act of kindness were you once shown that you will never forget?
One day I'm standing in line at the grocery store. There's an elderly Caucasian woman in line before me. At this time tension was very high with Trayvon Martin. She looks at my boyfriend, and says with anger, " is this your wife 😳? He says, "No, this is my girlfriend with an angry face back at her. She says, "I will have a problem with you, if you don't treat her good. She's absolutely gorgeous & I'm jealous! The sigh of relief I let out was massive. I was expecting her to say something negative or derogatory. She smiled & wished us a great day and walked out the store. It was now time for us to check out. The cashier smiled and said your all set she left money to cover your items. I shed tears & tried to rush outside to thank her and she was gone.

Never give up! Know that you are not the first person, or the last person, that will ever go through what you're experiencing. Be open to talking to someone & gather feedback. Reflect on a past experience that you surely thought you wouldn't survive, but you did and gather strength from that. You are here now to talk about it. You made it through. Be a blessing to others and never be afraid to share your testimony. Most people view the finished product but have no idea what it took to be where you are today.

What does it mean to be Black?
Being Black means the world has a perception of you, that doesn't match the reality of who you are and who your ancestors were.

What small act of kindness were you once shown that you will never forget?
The neighborhood I grew up in was different, depending on if you grew up north or south of 11th Ave. My father would NEVER let leave my block. At some point, I became cool with a guy named Vernon Lockwood, aka Boo, and my father became comfortable with him. Soon after, Boo introduced me to the guys from around the neighborhood and vouched for me. I became cool with almost everyone from the neighborhood. I'm not sure I would've been able to live as comfortable in my neighborhood, if it wasn't for Boo (RIP).

    What makes a person strong?
I would judge the strength of a person by their ability to get up after getting knocked down (figuratively speaking).

If you could give any advice or words of encouragement, what would it be?
"Don't Take Anything Personally. Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won't be the victim of needless suffering." - Don Miguel Ruiz

What does it mean to be Black?
Black is a term that people of African descent, who cannot reliably trace their nationality outside of the United States, must use because that is how we are identified in the US.

For me, being Black means that I come from a group of people that specialize in the wholly impossible (e.g. though we were banned from being literate for centuries, we are the undisputed cultural ambassadors of the United States) and that makes me incredibly proud.

What small act of kindness were you once shown that you will never forget?
I went to school and am very good friends with one of late Mayor Hatcher’s daughters. His daughter and I were the only students from Gary at the school and my family could not afford to visit me on campus. When the late Mayor Hatcher would visit campus, he’d take his daughter and I shopping and even gave me spending money. Money was always so limited in my childhood home and I only expected to accompany my friend and her father to the mall. I had no plans (or ability) to spend any money myself so I was blown away by his generosity. I was also very inspired by it and aimed to be in a position where I could not only help my own children, but other’s children as well.

    What makes a person strong?
    Their flexibility.

If you could give any advice or words of encouragement, what would it be?
    Be frugal, but generous.

What does it mean to be Black?
To be Black is to prosper in the face of every obstacle before us. We connect our humanity and our identity to the lives of our ancestors so that we can carry their legacy as we make ourselves a catalyst for change.

To be black is to be love, laughter, family, unapologetically human, and real.

What small act of kindness were you once shown that you will never forget?
In my junior year of high school in 2018 I took an AP American History course taught by an amazing teacher named Benjamin Gillman. On one particular day we had approached a part of American history discussing the Civil Rights Movement and like many before me I was one of three black students in a white classroom. While the lecture was going on and we were discussing affirmative action a number of students made some offensive statements out of ignorance. Being who I am I quickly corrected those assumptions and rightfully, so I was emotional and personally offended. After that point I had excused myself from the class and retuned at the end of the lecture.

After class was finished Mr. Gillman held me back and instead of chastising me for speaking against classmates or leaving class, he just sat with me and asked me if I was okay. That was one of the few times where I felt heard by somebody completely different from me who genuinely cared. He sat with me on his own time for an hour leaning about my experience as a black student and wanting to understand my perspective. He didn't use the time to talk about himself or include his own opinions, but he created a space for me to speak freely and openly.

That kindness he extended to me is something I will forever be grateful for and never forget.

    What makes a person strong?
I truly believe that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Every challenge and hardship we go through always serves the purpose of teaching us an invaluable lesson. During the hard moments is when we really learn about who we are as people and let ourselves authentically feel every emotion and thing around us. The knowledge, clarity, and strength that you can gain from overcoming an obstacle is an experience we should all never take for granted.

If you could give any advice or words of encouragement, what would it be?
Colin Powell once said "Have a vision. Be demanding." Continue to have goals and dreams and when you have those stop at nothing to peruse them. We have one life to achieve our aspirations so do not let anything keep you from your greatness.

What does it mean to be Black?
Being Black means embracing the power, strength, and beauty of my people, my culture.

What small act of kindness were you once shown that you will never forget?
I was in the McDonald’s drive thru and the person ahead paid for my meal. Therefore, I paid it forward & paid for the car behind me.

    What makes a person strong?
In my opinion strength is not only physical, but character as well. When a person can face adversity, or oppression with grace & prayer; not having to prove a point & lean on THE TRUE & LIVING GOD.

If you could give any advice or words of encouragement, what would it be?
Never compare yourself to anyone else. Simply be the best you, you can be! Be better than you were yesterday & keep building on that. Always ask FATHER GOD, JESUS, & THE HOLY GHOST to guide you in all things, in all ways every day.

What small act of kindness were you once shown that you will never forget?
When I was a teenager working at KFC in Chicago, a guy came to my register to order food. After he ordered his food, he gave me a twenty-dollar bill and told me to pass on the blessing.

    What makes a person strong?
I like to refer to Martin L King Jr.,, " The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands in times challenge and controversy." A strong man talks about how he would get out of an unfortunate situation whereas a weak man talks about why he is in the situation.
